International Partnership Makes Multicultural Tolerance
A Critical Imperative for 21st Century Children

Multicultural Playing Field launches "Ten Steps to Reach The Global Village" cultural awareness educational poster and CD-ROM teaching guide for parents and educators

RUMSON, N.J. (March 22, 2005) - It may take a village to raise a child, but in today's volatile world, it takes an educated and culturally aware child to build a tolerant and peaceful global village.

Multicultural Playing Field (MPF) - an international partnership whose mission is to make the world a more safe, inclusive and tolerant place - is releasing a global awareness education package with a map and CD-ROM teaching guide called "Ten Steps to Reach the Global Village" to help parents and educators reach children across the globe.

MPF's "Ten Steps to Reach the Global Village" poster and CD-ROM teaching guide takes children through a step-by-step educational experience helping build an awareness of the world beyond their personal experiences and better equipping them to view the world through a multicultural lens.

Following the 9/11 incident, several people from multiple countries met to discuss tangible ways to stop man-made disasters, according to Ikuko Atsumi, Ph.D.eq., a pioneer in multicultural and global business training and a founder of Multicultural Playing Field. The answer is a global education process for children worldwide, which materialized into the poster and teaching guide as a first step.

"This century has unfortunately started with a wave of multicultural friction, and our children have been increasingly exposed to scenes of terrorism and violence in the media," Atsumi said.

MPF believes that today, it is no longer a luxury to be aware and understanding of multicultural differences. The group believes that multicultural tolerance is a 21st century imperative. This imperative, however, is complicated by the fact there is a poor level of global awareness among children around the world, and there is generally a poor standard of global education in many leading countries.

Available in English, Japanese and Arabic, The Learning Map is a colorful, 26' X 39" poster that invites children to a virtual trip by a roller coaster to understand the scale of the globe, Earth's segments and imbalance of resources, and man's achievements and disasters.

The learning tool also challenges children to set ground rules for themselves and others in the world to follow that are sensitive to cultural differences, encourages them seek ways to make friends and experience the world, and bring everyone together as a multicultural team.

The learning package has three innovative objectives:
  1. Build a viewpoint to physically grasp the world as 'a whole', a Big House for all of us to live together.
  2. Set up a stance to interact with people and events wearing a multicultural lens.
  3. Present a common platform in learning for children worldwide.
"Ten Steps to Reach the Global Village" is appropriate for children of all ages, and for either school or home use, according to Mike Mueller, an MPF Partner.

"Educators can use the poster as a teaching tool for global education at a school by hanging it near the world map, for example," he said. "The map is appropriate for educators to enhance teaching multiple subjects like history, geography, science, sociology, poetry and psychology. Conversely, families can just as easily hang it in their living room or study for use as a common base for value-added family conversations," he added.
