Population of Japan
As of 1995, the living population of Japan was about 124,641,000. With a wide region of 377,728 square kilometers, the population density is about 329 people per square kilometer. The population growth is very small, about 0.7% per year. The Gross Domestic Product per capita is very high due to the high industrialization rate. Half of the land of Japan is mountainous. Hence most of the population is living in the coastal and low-lying areas especially in the eastern and western parts of the country.
The original tribal people of Japan are called the Ainu. They were forced to move to the north by immigrants from Asia. These Asian immigrants are the ancestors of the current Japanese population, and the Ainu currently reside on the island of Hokkaido.
Most of the Japanese population adopted the Shinto religion...Shinto involves praying to the Goddess of the Sun and showing respect for the ancestors spirits. Mt. Fuji is believed to be mystical and pure because it is the place where the Goddess of the Sun resides. In addition, many Japanese are Buddhists.
